Rising Stars Taekwondo Open 2025: A New Generation on the Mat
On July 19th 2025, Strive Taekwondo Club (STC), in collaboration with Iron Taekwondo League and under the auspices of the Malta Taekwondo Association, proudly participated in the Rising Stars Taekwondo Open. Hosted at Chiswick House School, this exciting event was designed to introduce young athletes to the world of competitive Taekwondo in a safe, structured, and inspiring environment.
STC was represented by 19 determined young athletes, each of whom stepped onto the mat with courage and commitment. We are proud to celebrate the efforts and spirit of:
Leah Pace, Jamie Brincat, Sophie Pickard, Bradley Micallef, Alaya Shembesh Gatt, Aisha Shembesh Gatt, Ruth Cutajar, Lina Ray Grech, Aleksei Lukin, Lucas Di Benedetto, Andrew Catania, Matthew Vella, Kane Falzon, Noah Kitcher Deguara, Zak Kitcher Deguara, Alexander Attard, Xavier Spiteri, Salvatore Riolo and Diego Jason Riolo.
How the Electronic Point System Works
🎯 Point Breakdown
Action Points Awarded
Valid punch to the trunk: 1 point
Valid kick to the trunk: 2 points
Valid turning (spinning) kick to the trunk: 4 points
Valid kick to the head: 3 points
Valid turning kick to the head: 5 points
A key feature of the competition was the use of the electronic scoring system, which brings precision and fairness to Taekwondo matches. Athletes wore electronic chest protectors and foot sensors that detect valid strikes based on impact and accuracy. Headgear equipped with sensors also registered head kicks.
When a strike meets the required criteria—such as correct technique, sufficient force, and proper target area—the system automatically awards points. This removes human error and bias, allowing athletes to focus on performance and strategy. For young competitors, it’s an excellent way to learn the importance of clean technique and tactical awareness.
Courage in the Face of Doubt
"Stepping onto the mat is never easy—whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned athlete. Doubts often creep in: Am I good enough? Will I get hurt? Will I perform well? What will others think? Will I be criticized? These thoughts are completely normal."
What truly defines a martial artist is the ability to show up despite those doubts. To face them, to push through, and to give your best. Often, the biggest challenge isn’t the opponent in front of us—but the voice of doubt within. Today, our athletes silenced that voice and stepped forward with bravery. That alone is a victory worth celebrating.
Some walked away with medals, others with valuable experience—but all walked away stronger. Every match was a lesson, and every lesson a step forward—not just in Taekwondo, but in life.
Gratitude to Our Supporters and Volunteers, AND OFFICIALS

A special and heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly. From setup to coordination, scoring to cleanup—your dedication and hard work were absolutely essential. Without your invaluable assistance, this event would not have been possible.
