Dracula Open 2025: Strive Juniors Showcase Tactical Maturity in Bucharest

This past weekend, Bucharest’s Sala Polivalenta hosted the prestigious Dracula Open 2025, a G1/E1 World Taekwondo event that drew 1400 elite athletes from across Europe & the world. Among the contenders were three junior athletes from Malta’s Strive Taekwondo ClubNathan Degiorgio, Samuel Vella, and Luke Chircop—who continued their competitive journey following last month’s Riga and Albania Opens.

Although Nathan Degiorgio had to withdraw due to injury, his presence was felt in spirit as teammates Samuel and Luke stepped onto the mats with renewed focus and tactical maturity. The club’s participation marked not just a physical contest, but a psychological evolution in their fighting approach.

Samuel Vella faced a formidable opponent from Spain and, despite a 2-0 loss, demonstrated significant progress. His use of rear-leg attacks, strategic fakes, and reactive counters showed a marked improvement in rhythm control and situational analysis—an encouraging leap from his performance in Albania. Samuel’s ability to adapt mid-fight, though still developing, reflects a growing mental resilience that promises future success. He placed 33rd out of 44 athletes in the -55kg category.

Luke Chircop delivered a standout performance, winning his first match against Greece 2-0 with poise and precision. His calm demeanor and efficient energy use allowed him to read and respond to his opponent’s movements with impressive clarity. In his second bout, Luke’s newfound confidence led to a more aggressive approach, which, while less effective, showcased his willingness to take risks and adapt under pressure. His 9th place finish out of 37 athletes in the -63kg category is a testament to his growing strategic acumen and mental fortitude.

What’s most exciting is the visible shift in mindset among these young athletes. They’re not just fighting—they’re thinking, analyzing, and evolving. Their matches are becoming more refined, aesthetically engaging, and tactically rich. This psychological growth, built on the momentum of recent competitions, sets a promising stage for their next challenge: the Croatia Open in November.

Strive Taekwondo Club continues to cultivate not just fighters, but thinkers—athletes who embody the spirit of adaptability, resilience, and strategic excellence. Romania was a stepping stone; Croatia awaits.
