Spanish International Open 2026 – Valuable Experience in La Nucía
Our club proudly participated in the 23rd Spanish International Open 2026, held in La Nucía, Spain, one of Europe’s most competitive and well‑organized taekwondo events. Competing on the junior day of the tournament, our athlete Luke Chircop represented the club in the Junior -63 kg category, gaining invaluable international experience against high‑level opposition.
Strong Opening Performance
Luke opened his campaign with a convincing victory against a Spanish opponent, controlling the bout from start to finish. Demonstrating excellent adaptability, confidence, and tactical awareness, Luke maintained composure throughout the match and secured a clear points gap, reflecting both his preparation and his ability to read and respond to his opponent’s style effectively.
This fight highlighted Luke’s growing maturity in competition — staying calm under pressure, changing rhythm when needed, and executing his game plan with confidence.
Challenging Second Match
In his second bout, Luke faced a skilled Italian fighter who excelled at distance management, effectively preventing Luke from closing the gap and engaging on his own terms. Luke attempted to adjust by introducing side movements and angle changes to break through the distance barrier.
However, two key factors made this adaptation challenging:
Limited recent training time focused on this specific movement pattern
A foot injury sustained in the opening match, which restricted mobility and explosiveness when it mattered most
Despite his efforts to adapt mid‑fight, Luke was ultimately unable to impose his game and exited the competition.
Growth Beyond the Result
While the final result did not place Luke on the podium, the experience itself was extremely valuable. Completing two international matches at this level reinforces an important lesson for both athlete and coaching team:
The ability to quickly adapt to different fighting styles and make decisive tactical adjustments is essential — and this is exactly the right mentality required in training.
Luke showed resilience, awareness, and the willingness to adjust under difficult circumstances — traits that will undoubtedly pay off as he continues to develop.
Stay in Benidorm & Future Plans
Outside the competition itself, our stay in Benidorm stood out as another major highlight of the trip. Set in a fantastic location, the team was able to enjoy a rare balance between the calming atmosphere of the surrounding mountains and the relaxed coastal setting of the beach. This combination provided the ideal environment to unwind, recover, and reflect upon the competition. Benidorm proved to be an excellent destination for a truly wholesome and well‑rounded trip, perfectly complementing the demands of high‑level international competition.
